Spine Team

A multi-disciplinary team approach with members includes treating orthopaedic physician, Schroth therapist and orthotist plays an essential role for successful treatment of any spine deformities. Periodically follow up with the spine orthotist, regular physiotherapy, and scheduled visit to the orthotist for orthotic adjustments facilitates a successful outcome. Supportive family members are also an integral part of the team to support the patient psychologically and to motivate them to lead a confident life.

Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature in the spine. A side bend which is simultaneously associated with a rotation of individual vertebral bodies. The ribs connected to the vertebral bodies also rotate, that forms so-called rib hump in the area of thoracic spine. The rotation, produces a lumbar spine area also called the lumbar bulge. The most common type of scoliosis is known as Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) which develops during the adolescent growth spurt and accounts for around 85% of the cases. Most scoliosis cases have no known cause. It affects 10 times more in girls than boys which can be treated with good outcome.

Early detection of such deformities are important. The restoration of abnormal spine shape is much favorable by a Scoliosis brace and physiotherapy (Schroth therapy) which is most effective during the growth stage.

Non-treatment may lead to significantly reduced physical mobility and efficiency, reduction of life quality, early degeneration of the spine, misloaded intervertebral discs that can cause irritation that leads to sensory disorders in arms and severe pain, and mental stress because of deformed aesthetic look.

Spine Curve Types

Scoliosis spine curves are classified based on which of the three regions of the spine is affected – the upper thoracic, main thoracic or thoracolumbar/lumbar. It is also important to know whether the deformity is structural or non-structural. The spine specialist classifies the curve types before the patient visits MOBILIS. The diagnosing physician also measures the severity of angle [Cobb angle] to decide whether the patient requires conservative or surgical treatment.

Mobilis clinicians uses unique classification systems for the correction method which is proven and successful over several years.

Spine Assessment

The deformed spine is assessed by an experienced Certified Orthotic spine specialist once your doctor has prescribed a custom scoliosis spine brace and customized your scoliosis spine brace. Accurate measurements are very important for our clinicians to achieve perfect correction and fitting. This also will help in force directions which will influence the final outcome.

A spine X-Ray is mandatory during the orthotic assessment.

MOBILIS uses the latest white light 3D scanner to capture the actual measurements. The scan is then converted to digital 3D shape where our clinicians can do necessary corrections before it is sent for the manufacturing process.

SCOLI3D™ Spine Brace

MOBILIS Spine Deformities Treatment clinic offers SCOLI3D spine brace – a computer-aided designed [CAD] brace – after a thorough scoliosis orthotic assessment. Based on the proven principles of world-leading scoliosis researchers, MOBILIS is proud to develop its own design. The SCOLI3D brace treatment is designed to account for all the aspects of scoliosis curve. Each spine brace is individually designed and manufactured. The goal of the treatment is a gradual elongation and straightening of the spine.

Manufacturing

Most of the manufacturing process of SCOLI3D is digitally routed. It starts with the 3D patient scan, our CAD designers design the Scoliosis spine brace digitally and then send the file to 7 Axis robotic carving for manufacturing the spine model. Achieving a tolerable spine correction with corrective force, rotation correction, and counterforce is carefully planned during CAD design. This process helps us take care of every detail in precision.

Trial and Final Fitting

During trial, the fitting is checked very carefully, small corrections are made and the patient gets time to try the corset after each change. The specialist has to check and assess these changes afterwards. Only then an optimal fit can be guaranteed at home.

After two weeks of wearing the corset, we arrange a control appointment during which the pressure zones can be checked and, if necessary, additional padding added.

1 Year scoliosis Program

MOBILIS scoliosis treatment clinic in UAE insists that our clients undergo a year-long follow-up program for the best outcome. The program includes follow-up consultations and growth adjustments which are necessary once the curve is progressing.

Our Scoliosis spine brace specialists follow a bespoke programme which is proven and effective. We integrate a tiny wearable time-tracking sensor inside the brace after obtaining the patient’s consent which will allow us to track the actual wearing time of the brace. This also helps us to plan and guide the best treatment plan till the next follow-up visit.

A strict therapy programme should be followed and monitored for optimal outcomes.

Kyphosis

Kyphosis is an excessive outward curve of the spine which results in an abnormal rounding of the upper back. This condition is also known as roundback or hunchback. Kyphosis can occur at any age, but is common during adolescence. The condition usually stops progressing once a child is older and has stopped growing.

Kyphosis caused by poor posture (postural kyphosis) does not need any treatment. It can usually be corrected by improving your posture and performing strengthening exercises.

If a child has kyphosis as a result of abnormally shaped vertebrae (Scheuermann’s kyphosis), they may need custom brace therapy combined with physiotherapy. Surgery is often required for children born with congenital kyphosis.
Your treating physician decides the treatment based on factors such as person’s age, gender, severity of the curve, how flexible the curve is etc.

Kyphosis Bracing

Teenagers with mild to moderate kyphosis are often prescribed to wear a custom kyphosis brace. The brace is worn while the bones are still growing and this will prevent the curve from getting worse.

Wearing a brace may feel uncomfortable during the first few days. However, most users get used to them after a while. MOBILIS designers make sure that the braces are designed to be convenient, aesthetically pleasing and comfortable, so the person can confidently do a range of physical activities with the brace.

The users need to wear the brace until reach to bone maturity, which is decided based on diagnostic measures like X-Rays performed by the treating physician. Bracing isn’t usually recommended for adults who have stopped growing because it won’t correct the position of the spine.
